Interior Halts Drilling and Mining in the Thompson Divide

Secretary Haaland announces the finalized rule that will preserve 221,898 acres in central Colorado for 20 years.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced Wednesday that it is prohibiting drilling and mining in the Thompson Divide, a 221,898-acre area in Colorado that covers valleys, foothills, and several mountains. President Biden’s administration first announced a draft to withdraw the area from all potential oil and mineral leases in 2022. Now that it is finalized, the Thompson Divide will be protected from resource extraction for 20 years.

“The Thompson Divide area is a treasured landscape, valued for its wildlife habitat, clean air and water, and abundant recreation, ecological and scenic values,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland stated. “The Biden-Harris administration is committed to ensuring that special places like these are protected for future generations.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland to seek God’s wisdom as she oversees the Department of the Interior.
  • For U.S. federal officials as they assess and determine the public lands that warrant conserving.
